“It didn’t matter how many times he reset the story or remade the introductions – Aaron always fell in love with her. EVERYTIME.”
Shatter Me Series: A Wild Ride Through a Dystopian World
Hey there, book enthusiasts! If you’re on the lookout for a series, look no further because this one has it all, dystopian masterpiece, swoon-worthy romance, and a touch of supernatural, that will leave you breathless. A romance thriller written by Tahereh Mafi has total of six books and five novellas. Ofcourse, I read this whole series after reading the line at the top on some social media feed, I love man who gives off “she is the only one for me” energy.
The Characters: Love, Betrayal, and Everything in Between
One of the standout aspects of this series is the characters. Juliette Ferrars is our girl, and her journey from a scared, confused girl, to a fierce leader is both heart-wrenching and inspiring (And something I love the most about this series, duhh I’m a feminist). A 17-year-old girl whose touch is lethal and will kill anyone who touches her skin for long enough. We find Juliette in asylum 264 days prior to the start of the book after accidentally killing a small boy with her touch when she was 14.
Now comes the man for which every reader girl could die, Aaron Warner, the chief commander of Sector 45 of the Reestablishment. 5’9. Green eyes. Blond-gold hair. Inhumanly Handsome. Starting off as cold and manipulative person but gradually changes into a more loving human being as the books progress. Moreover, he is desperately in love with Juliette from the beginning of the series (a complete obsession, I might add). He, except from Adam (someone who seems like the hero in the first book but is not), can touch Juliette without any consequences.
There is one more person, aside from the main leads, who are going on my-favorite-persons-on-the-person list – Kenji Kishimoto. A 20-year-old soldier in Warner’s army who is friends with Adam. He is later found out to be a member of Omega Point (a rebellion point) and is shown to have a gift of invisibility. He develops an admiration for Juliette which she returns and they form a strong bond, as best friend, almost like siblings (their banter is so amazing and my favorite, adding humor to the story).
The Six Books (My unfiltered thoughts after reading all the books one by one)
Shatter Me: What the fuck is happening? What the fuck I just read? Honestly, I’m not a big fan of books that are written in different background as of reality because a little part of me likes to think that love written in books might be true. Falling in love written in books is my cup of tea, you know. Call me delusional, I don’t give a fuck, but I want a man out there who look at me like I’m the only thing that matters, someone who think I’m the most beautiful girl he has ever seen and “I would be the death of them”. But still this book has that kind of pull that make me binge read the book just to know the whole story and the journey of J, and it was so worth it. But this book was like I have to wait some minutes after chapter to understand what I’m reading.
To narrow somethings down here is the story: Set in a futuristic world where the government controls everything. The Reestablishment promised a future too perfect to be possible and society was too desperate to disbelieve, they never realized they were signing away their souls to a group panning on taking advantage of their ignorance and fear. There are many people with supernatural abilities in this world as well and many revolutionists as well – Omega point being one of them. Almost didn’t read this book when found out who is Aaron, the villain, getting the girl and I was so stupid to judge someone that fast. So Stupid.
Unravel Me: Who the fuck is getting the heroine – Adam or Aaron? I was really confused at this point as to who is the hero or the villain. I didn’t really consider the possibility that one of them could be hero while the other couldn’t be possibly a villain. (Gosh girl, not every ex-boyfriend is a villain.)
Ignite Me: I love this book the most, like wow. The moment when Juliette realize her touch isn’t lethal, her touch is power. Who doesn’t love a strong female lead, right? I was almost frustrated at J that she has such incredible powers but can’t do anything proper with it. But in this very book, she transforms she got a purpose she becomes stronger, smarter. I, myself, love strong female leads and I was waiting for these very moments since I started the book. I also have to went back pages to read the moment of triumph as it felt so great and satisfying. This book also put a dent in my binge read session as I wanted to end this series at this book as a happy ending but my curiosity gets the better of me. And I have never been more grateful. One of the last lines:
“I am Juliette Ferrars, and I will lead this nation. I challenge anyone who would stand against me.”
Restore Me: There is this one line that got my heart(men defending their women are so hot)-
“If they think you incapable it is because they are idiots. Idiots who’ve already forgotten that you were able to accomplish in a matter of months what they had been trying to do for decades. They are forgetting where you started, what you’ve overcome, how quickly you found the courage to fight when they could hardly stand.”
Defy Me: This is the book which has the line that was my dedication to read this whole series – “It didn’t matter how many times he reset the story or remade the introductions – Aaron always fell in love with her. EVERYTIME.” There was also this big twist (you might or might not understand this line, yes, it’s the twist). This moment I hoped I had the superpower to instantly know what’s going on and what’s going to happen next without wasting any more time. I wished I could go though this book and all the next ones in one go as to see the ending faster and without wasting any precious moment in between.
Imagine Me: The words are a blow I couldn’t have anticipated. Mafi knows how to keep her readers guessing. So, hold onto your hats, because this series is full of plot twists and turns. Some totally unexpected. Like Juliette’s real name – Ella Sommers.
Final Thoughts: Should You Read It?
Absolutely! If you’re into dystopian fiction with a strong romantic subplot and a touch of supernatural elements, “Shatter Me” is a must-read. It’s got everything: intense action, emotional depth, and characters you’ll love (or hate to love).
